September 17, 2008David Ramsey weaves an amazingly rich and touching story about how listening to Lil’ Wayne helped him survive his first year teaching in New Orleans. Ramsey captures the essence of the city, teaching, and its favorite son into what is almost certainly the best thing ever written about Weezy, and the best part is it’s not even entirely about him.
“On New Orleans radio, it seems like nearly every song features Lil Wayne. My kids sang his songs in class, in the hallways, before school, after school. I had a student who would rap a Lil Wayne line if he didn’t know the answer to a question.
An eighth grader wrote his Persuasive Essay on the topic “Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive.” Main ideas for three body paragraphs: Wayne has the most tracks and most hits, best metaphors and similes, competition is fake.”
Cultivate simplicity, Coleridge.
September 16, 2008I haven’t been around much because I’ve been trying to avoid screens. I simply don’t enjoy them right now. It’s a bad time of year to be feeling averse because school is kicking into high gear, but it’s been nice. Reading, writing, photographing, friends, outdoors, thinking. It’s not so bad.
How I would capture my feeling in as few words as possible is: “Better than sitting in front of a screen.”
I don’t think it’s permanent, but rather part of a movement I’ve been making towards maximizing quality input. I’ve been digesting and refining a high volume of solid ideas from a summer’s worth of living and actively trying to fit them into my life. Maybe I’ve just reached my absorption threshold for the time being.
